The RoHS directive restricts the use of certain
hazardous substances commonly used in the manufacturing of electronic equipment
and requires producers of electronic equipment to reduce the concentration of
these hazardous materials which include:
- Lead
- Cadmium
- Mercury
- Hexavalent Chromium
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
The RoHS directive states that as of July 1, 2006, electrical and electronic
equipment manufacturers must eliminate the use of all of the above materials.
Although RoHS is a European Union (EU) Directive, manufacturers of EEE outside
Europe must also abide by this legislation if the equipment they produce is
ultimately imported into an EU member state.
